Vegetation management.

Vegetation management is the clearing you cannot do by hand: the undergrowth, pest plants, weeds and blackberries growing under and around trees, fire breaks, fence lines and tracks through your property. The trees stay. The ground is cleared and the place is left looking tidy. It suits councils, utilities, farms, builders, landowners, golf courses and resorts.

What it covers.

  1. 1

Undergrowth, weeds, pest plants and blackberries cleared from under and around trees.

  2. 2

Fire breaks and fence line clears.

  3. 3

Pathways and tracks put through your property.

  4. 4

Easements, creek lines and road verges on private property.

  5. 5

Regrowth cleared, so the ground stays under control.

  6. 6

A tidy finish: all the vegetation left sticking up is ground over, so the place looks nice.

Who it is for.

  1. 1

    Local councils and utilities.

  2. 2

    Farms, farmers and landowners.

  3. 3

    Builders preparing a site.

  4. 4

Golf courses and resorts, clearing scrub on the edges and keeping it open.

The machine for the job.

A remote-controlled, tracked forestry mulcher. It is like a giant wheel that drives along and chews up all the undergrowth into mulch. It drives through the middle of the trees, clearing the undergrowth and leaving the trees standing, and it handles growth up to stems around 150 mm thick. It works on steep ground and in dense areas where people and other machines cannot go safely.

How a job runs.

  1. 1

Drew walks the site with you and quotes on the spot.

  2. 2

In a dense area the mulcher is used to get access to the trees and clear around them.

  3. 3

The trees and larger work are done first. The mulcher then comes in last and grinds over the remaining vegetation, leaving the site tidy and presentable.

  4. 4

Clearing with a machine like this is often more cost-effective than putting a crew in to cut small growth by hand and chip it.

Safety.

  1. 1

A risk assessment is done for every job.

  2. 2

The mulcher is remote controlled, so the operator is well away from the cutting.

  3. 3

The work is on private property, away from roads. If a job is near a road, traffic management is arranged.

How it is priced.

Every job is quoted on site. For larger and ongoing work, it can be quoted or charged at a day rate, and regular visits can be arranged if you need the same ground kept under control.

Approvals.

Native vegetation, trees near waterways, and some areas are protected. Whether you need approval depends on your council and the land. Check before work starts, and tell us what you find.

What customers say.

“I had 15 trees removed in record time and they cleaned up so well, if there hadn't been a stray pine nut in the odd place, you would have never known they had even been there.”

Questions, answered.

What is vegetation management?

It is clearing the undergrowth, weeds, pest plants and regrowth under and around trees, plus fire breaks, fence lines and tracks, while the trees stay. It is the clearing you cannot do by hand.

Who is vegetation management for?

Councils, utilities, farms and landowners, builders, golf courses and resorts.

What machine do you use?

A remote-controlled, tracked forestry mulcher. It drives through the trees, chews the undergrowth into mulch and leaves the trees standing. It handles stems up to around 150 mm thick, and it works on steep ground.

Is it safe?

A risk assessment is done for every job. The machine is remote controlled, so the operator stays well away from the cutting. Work is on private property away from roads, and traffic management is arranged if a job is near a road.

How is it priced, and can you set up a regular programme?

Every job is quoted on site. Larger and ongoing work can be quoted or charged at a day rate, and regular visits can be arranged to keep the ground under control.

Do I need approval to work on a tree?

It depends on the tree and on your council. Some native, large or significant trees are protected, and the rules differ between councils. Check with your council before work starts, and tell Drew about the tree when you call so the job can be planned properly.
